As you might have read in the Baix
Ebre Maps section, Tarragona is one of the provinces of Catalonia. Tarragona
is divided in 10 regions (known as Comarcas in Spanish): Conca de Barberà, Alt
Camp, Baix Penedés, Tarragonés, Baix Camp, Priorat, Ribera d'Ebre, Terra Alta,
Baix Ebre and Montsià.
We specialize in 4 of these regions, namely Baix Camp, Montsià, Terra Alta and
Ribera d'Ebre. Find interesting information and details on each of these regions
below.
The Baix Ebre Region
Surface Area: 1.034,8 km²
Municipalities: 14
Population Density: 72,44 hab./km²
Capital: Tortosa
Website information: /www.tortosa.com
In the Baix Ebre you can find 2 Natural Parks: The Natural Park of the Ports
of Beseit mountain range and the Natural Park of the Ebro Delta, great places
due to the richness of its vegetation, variety of animal life (in the Ports
the protected Mountain Goat, and in the Delta all related to birdlife), and
beautiful landscape. The Ebro river flows through this region finding its way
out in the Ebro Delta.
Olive groves, orange trees and almonds in production, and rice fields are very
easy to come across in this region, which spreads itself from the impressive
mountain range towards peaceful beaches of the Mediterranean Sea, in which you
can also practise all sorts of water sports.
The Monstiá Region
Surface Area: 735,37 km²
Municipalities: 12
Population Density: 84,30 hab/km² (2004)
Capital: Amposta
Website information: www.montsia.cat
The Montsià also shares with the Baix Ebre the Natural Park of the Ports
of Beseit and the Natural Park of the Ebro Delta. This is more of a flatter
region although it is surrounded on the west by the Ports of Beseit Mountain
range, Montsià mountains and the Senia River, and on the east by the
Mediterranean Sea. The crops that define this area are the olives, the oranges,
and of course the rice.
The Terra Alta Region
Surface Area: 743,4 km²
Municipalities: 12
Population Density: 17,12 hab./km² (2005)
Capital: Gandesa
Website information: /www.terra-alta.org
The Terra Alta orography offers an extreemly varied landscape as it is surrounded
by the Ports of Beseit, the Ports of Horta, the Pàndols Mountains, and
the Cavalls Mountains. The river Ebro and its tributaries Matarraña and
Algars are also present in the region's natural lifestyle. The main crops in
production are the vines, olives, and corn, being the vines the most important
ones to produce their famouse wine with Denominación de Origen (Certified
Quality Product of the region). It is the second region to cultivate more hectars
of vines in Catalonia, being the Alt Penedes region the first.
The Ribera d'Ebre Region
Surface Area: 827,3 km²
Municipalities: 14
Population Density: 27,71 hab./km²
Capital: Mora d'Ebre
Website information: www.riberadebre.info
The Ribera d'Ebre region is the result of the richness of the river Ebro that
flows through creating impressive meanders, specially the one of Flix, islands
and riverbanks. It is very typical to find stone houses overlooking the river
with colourful geraniums hanging over their balconies. This generous valley
allows fertile lands to produce sweet fruit, olive groves and vineyards.
The main touristic spots are concentrated in the towns of Miravet, Tivissa,
Flix and Riba-Roja.
